MLB 2016 is finally here! With the start of a new season we will be giving out some free daily fantasy baseball content!
The first free piece of content we will be giving out is a series, “The Arm, The Stack, The Bat”. In this series we will be discussing our favorite pitcher, team to stack, and individual batter for the day.
April 3rd Slate
Today we have a small slate to start off the season. While not officially opening day, the MLB has been kind enough to give us a three game slate to start the DFS baseball season. Unfortunately it doesn’t look to be a very exciting one. Currently the highest total is only 7 runs, for both the Blue Jays vs Rays and Mets vs Royals games. A combination of top pitchers, cold temperatures, and unfriendly ballparks limit the upside of the batters on this slate as a whole.
Francisco Liriano (PIT)
Seeing as it’s opening day for the 6 teams playing today, each team is deploying their top pitching option. Our favorite of the field is Francisco Liriano. In 2015 he had the second highest K/9 rate of any of today’s starting pitchers and also faces the team with the lowest run total of the day. Liriano also has the weather on his side, as temperatures are predicted to be 39-44 degrees Fahrenheit and the air density will be high. Last season he ranked 7th in K/9 and 13th in xFIP. The difference between his splits were also minimal.
Other Pitchers We Like: Chris Archer and Adam Wainwright
New York Mets
Sadly for batting picks today, the theme of the day is low team run lines. Facing off against the Kansas City Royals, the New York Mets currently have the highest run total: Over 3.5 -118. While they’re not playing in a particularly hitter friendly ballpark, the weather looks good considering the time of year. The temperature is predicted to be 67-74 during the course of the game and the wind should be blowing out to center field. Edinson Volquez is pitching for KC, and he lagged far behind all the other pitchers starting today in nearly every category.
EDIT: The Mets’ total has risen to 4 +102 further cementing them as our favorite stack.
Lucas Duda (Mets)
On such a small slate, it won’t come as a surprise that our favorite batter is on the same team we’re looking to stack. We project Lucas Duda as our top hitter for this slate. As mentioned above we like the Met’s game environment better than any other team. The left handed Duda faces the right handed Edinson Volquez. Last year the differences in Volquez pitching splits were fairly substantial. We expect Duda to be batting cleanup, which also gives him fantasy upside to score points with players on base.
